What is Clinical Supervision?
Many professionals working in helping professions
are required to have clinical supervision as part of their ethical
codes of practice or their conditions of service. For instance
this applies to psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and
sometimes nurse therapists. Most trainees in helping professions
are required to have a clinical supervisor during their training.
The process is a supportive one. It allows you to share your experiences
of your client work within a confidential environment, to gain
a second opinion, to share your thoughts on the appropriate way
to work with your clients, to perhaps gain advice from a more experienced
practitioner.
 How
much supervision do I need?
The amount of clinical supervision required
by a practitioner is usually determined by the course (if you
are training), the professional body to which you belong or
your employer. Practitioners who work full time will usually
have a 2 hour supervision session each month.
