What is Personal Therapy?

It is sometimes the case that training courses for psychotherapists, counsellors and psychologist require trainees to engage in personal therapy as a requirement of the course.

Personal therapy simply means coming along for therapy as a client and experiencing what it is like from the client’s perspective.

How many sessions will I need?

Often the course will specify the number of hours of personal therapy required for trainees.

We generally make a contract for 6 sessions. If more sessions are needed the arrangement can be reviewed at that point.

What will I have to do?

Many trainees believe that it will be difficult to come along for therapy sessions when they do not have a ‘real’ problem and are simply meeting course requirements. However, there are few of us who have absolutely no worries at all and this experience often provides a opportunity to talk to someone who is not a friend or family about everyday issues. Many trainees find this a very helpful experience.
